Reforestation: Tree Planting

Reforestation: Tree Planting

Our Charitable Pledge

For every product sold on our shop, we will plant one tree in the Indonesian rainforests with One Tree Planted.

Thanks to you, our amazing customers, we were able to plant 846 trees in 2019.
699 of these were planted in the Indonesian rainforest.
We  also regularly donate trees to other parts of the world that need it such as the Amazon Rainforest and Australia.
In August and September of 2019, we decided to pledge all trees raised to the Amazon rainforest which experienced devastating forest firesDuring these two months, we planted 147 trees in the Amazon rainforest.

Why tree planting?

Well, it's personal. Pia's sister Ruby spent a summer volunteering in rainforest conservation in Borneo, and has seen first hand the devastation inflicted as well as the impact that charities such as One Tree Planted are having there.

Ruby's words...

After graduating in 2018 from an MSc Sustainable Management of Natural Resources, the following year I travelled to Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan, Borneo, to undertake practical conservation work. Friends of the National Park Foundation (FNPF) are an Indonesian charity working to protect and restore the natural environment around them as well as engaging and educating local communities on the importance of conservation.

FNPF are one of the many organisations that One Tree Planted support through raising donations and awareness. Money donated through One Tree Planted goes towards helping FNPF plant thousands of trees every year in Borneo.

The Borneo rainforest is not only a valuable home to many precious species including iconic Orangutans, but also an important carbon store at a time of continually increasing global greenhouse gas emissions. Unfortunately, the growing demand for palm oil, illegal hunting and gold mining are all having a detrimental effect on this precious resource through large-scale deforestation.

FNPF work tirelessly to minimise deforestation, fight the effects of these industries, educate and work with local communities and most importantly re-establish rainforest on areas of reclaimed degraded land. Every tree planted contributes towards restoring precious habitat through planting native species with an amazing 73% success rate.

Carbon Offsetting

By planting trees we hope to offset some of the carbon we produce when making our products.

Did you know...?

A mature tree absorbs an average of 21.7kg of carbon dioxide a year.

Clothing is responsible for large amounts of carbon released into the environment, studies have shown the average carbon footprint of the following garments:

  • Average cotton T-shirt - 15kg CO2 eq
  • Average pair of Jeans - 33.4kg CO2 eq
  • Polyester jacket - 18kg CO2 eq
  • An average pair of underwear - 1.9kg CO2 eq (ecotricity.co.uk)
