Reforestation Update | Earth Day 2021

Today we celebrate Earth Day, a global movement to create a positive change for the future of our planet.

Growing out of the first Earth Day in 1970, the movement is now marked by more than a billion people in countries around the world, driving meaningful action to change human behaviour and create global, national and local policy changes across a range of environmental and social issues.
At Studio Pia, we are all too aware of the environmental impact the fashion industry has on the world and being a part of that; we wanted to give something back. In 2019 we partnered with One Tree Planted, a non-profit on a mission to make it easier for individuals and businesses to give back to the environment, create a healthier climate, protect biodiversity and help reforestation efforts worldwide. By planting trees, we hope to help offset our carbon footprint, and for every product sold on our site, we plant one tree.

Australia

In 2020, we planted an amazing 1,857 trees, with 236 going to Australia after the country experienced one of the largest natural disasters in history. Fire season brought about unprecedented destruction as wildfires spread rapidly, burning approximately 18,636,079 hectares (46,050,750 acres) across all states. It is estimated that more than 1 billion mammals, birds, and reptiles likely lost their lives in the blazes, adding to the existing pressures on Australia's unique ecosystems.

One Tree Planted works with local landowners and environmental organisations to improve the health of Australian forests and bush lands and help restore habitat for native species that depend on these environments, such as koalas, echidnas and sugar gliders. Restoring these areas also means putting wildlife habitats back intact and creating healthy ecosystems capable of being resilient to climate change, which is critical as these areas are considered to be biodiversity hotspots.

Indonesia

Additionally, 1,621 trees were donated to the Indonesian rainforest, helping to restore ecosystems in this biodiversity hotspot that has experienced profound degradation caused by rampant deforestation for palm oil plantations, damaging peat fires, and extensive logging.

Indonesia's forests provide habitat for endangered species such as Sumatran tigers, orang-utans, over 1,500 birds and countless other species, in addition to being a source of shelter, food, and livelihood for millions of people.

One Tree Planted incredible partners in Indonesia are working to ensure balance is restored to forest ecosystems and the local communities that depend on them. Efforts are focused on mobilising support from a coalition of local and international partners to develop nurseries and plant thousands of native trees.
Thanks to our customers, every purchase plants a tree that contributes to restoring precious forests and bush land, helping to clean the air we breathe, filtering the water we drink and provide habitat to over 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity.
