Every Studio Pia piece begins with cruelty-free peace silk and ends at a hand-finishing bench in a small European workshop. This is what goes into each piece — and why it is made to be worn until it's worn out.
Peace Silk
Peace silk — sometimes called Ahimsa silk — is silk produced from cocoons left intact long enough for the moth to emerge naturally. It costs roughly twice as much to produce as conventional silk, it is less uniform, and it cannot be woven on certain industrial looms. These sound like problems. They are why we use it.
Ours is GOTS-certified organic and produced in India by fairly paid, highly skilled artisans, then paired with organic cotton jersey made to the same environmental and social standards.
Calais Lace & Embroidery
Our lace is woven in the same Calais mills that have served couture for over a century. Each season our Founder and Creative Director, Pia, hand sketches new embroideries, produced exclusively for us by European embroidery houses.
In 2021 we introduced a certified recycled tulle base created from post-consumer recycled polyester, and we aim to release at least one recycled embroidery range every season.
The Finishing Bench
Collections are designed in London and ethically crafted by a modern lingerie workshop in Europe, where every maker is paid a fair, fixed wage. Seams are flat-finished, elastics are anchored by hand, and closures are cast in 24k gold-plated hardware.
Some pieces simply refuse to be hurried — our most intricate embroidered bra takes twenty-four hours of handwork. Every parcel is still hand-tied before it leaves us.
Made to Last
We believe lingerie should be worn until it's worn out. Delicate materials — tulle, silk, gold-plated hardware — reward a little care: all Studio Pia garments are hand wash only, dried flat and away from sunlight.
